What is a Working Group of Windows

A working group of Windows is a set of networked computers. Its function is to lay the foundations useful to share files and printers among the computers in the network. A computer a member of a working group may allow another member of the same group of computer access their shared resources. What is the difference between Workgroup and Domain?

All computers running a Microsoft Windows operating system in a network must necessarily be part of a Workgroup or aDomain . The difference between the two is the way in which you manage the computers and other resources on the network. Usually the computers in a corporate network or large are part of a domain while the computer of a home network are part of a working group, and often even a group home.

How to check if the computer belongs to a Workgroup or Domain

Windows 8 / 8.1 | Windows 7 | Windows Vista
We press on the computer keyboard keys Windows (is the key with the Windows logo) and Pause / Breaksimultaneously.
This will open the dialog system .
In Settings Computer name, domain and the working group will see the term Working Group (followed by the name) orDomain .

Windows XP
reward on the computer keyboard keys Windows (is the key with the Windows logo) and Pause / Break simultaneously.
This will open the dialog box Properties of the system .
We click on the tab Computer Name .
Under Full computer name: appears the term  Working Group (followed by the name) or Domain .

 

What are the characteristics of the Working Group of Windows

• All computers are peers, no computer has control over the other computer.
In a domain, one or more computers are servers that are used to control the security and permissions for all computers in the domain.
• It is usually formed by A maximum of 20 computers.
• It is not protected by a password.
• All computers must be on the same local network or subnet.
• To access files and folders on your computer’s workgroup, you must have an account on the same computer.
Let’s say the user Andrea ‘s White PC (belonging to the Workgroup: WORKGROUP ) wants to access the file calledstaff on the PC Black (also belonging to the Workgroup: WORKGROUP ). To access the file Staff , both on the PC and PC White Black will be a user account Andrea

 

The Working WORKGROUP

During the installation of a Microsoft Windows operating system must necessarily choose if the computer must belong to a workgroup or a domain. If the choice falls on the first option is likely that the computer is part of a working group. This is because when we configure the network settings for the first time, Windows automatically creates a workgroup calledWORKGROUP . The only exception is with Windows XP Home Edition; with this version of the Windows operating system creates a group named MSHOME .

 

How to create a Working Group of Windows

Let’s see how to create a working group of Windows , or how to change the membership of a computer from a domain member to a member of a working group . Warning : if your computer is a domain member, before being added to working group will be removed from the domain and the corresponding user account will be disabled.

tab Computer name we click on Change …
In Member of check that is selected Working Group:
We type the name of the working group that we want to create.
I click OK .
In the Name / Domain Changes computer we click on OK .
We restart Windows for changes to take effect.

Windows XP

In Member of do click Workgroup:
We type the name of the working group that we want to create.
I click OK .
In the Computer Name Changes we click on OK .
We restart Windows for changes to take effect.

How to add a computer to a Windows Workgroup

If we want to add a computer to the working group of Windows called OFFICE .
The procedure to add a computer to a working group of existing is identical to that described for → create a workgroup of Windows .
We follow the procedure and when we are required now to enter the name of the working group we type OFFICE .
I click OK and restart Windows for changes to take effect.

How to change the name of the Working Group of Windows

Warning : if we change the name of an existing workgroup will create a new working group with the name we chose.
If we want to change the name of the Windows workgroup WORKGROUP with OFFICE .
The procedure to change the name a working group is identical to that described for → create a workgroup of Windows.
We follow the procedure and in Member of: replace WORKGROUP with OFFICE box Working Group:
I click OK and restart Windows for changes to take effect .
