The Public Folders Windows represent the fastest way to share files between users using the same computer and between different computers on the same network. To share a document, a piece of music, picture or video simply copy or move it to a public folder. Any file or folder inside of a public folder is automatically shared with all users who are able to access it.
Public folders of Windows are present on all computers running Windows 8 / 8.1, Windows 7 and Windows Vista .
Where are the Public Folders in Windows
All Public Folders Windows are contained within a folder called Public .

How to access the Public folder Windows
Windows 8 / 8.1
We press on the computer keyboard keys Windows (is the key with the Windows logo) and E simultaneously.
In the group devices and units (Windows 8.1) or Hard Drive (Windows 8) we double-click Local Disk ( C 🙂 andMembers .
We click on the Public to view public folders in Windows.
Windows 7 | Windows Vista
We press on the computer keyboard key Windows (is the key with the Windows logo) and we click on Computer .
In Group Hard drives do double-click Local Disk (C 🙂 and Members .
We click on Public to view public folders in Windows.
With Windows 7 , we can access the main public folders in this way.
We press on the computer keyboard key Windows and do click Documents .
In the left pane, under Collections, we will find the My Documents, Pictures, Music and Videos. If we expand each of these folders (by clicking the arrow) will see the public folders: Public Documents Public Pictures Public Music Videos public .
How to share files between different users of the same computer using the Public Folders in Windows
To share documents, music, pictures or videos between different users of the same computer we must not do is to copy or move files to the Public folder or in a subfolder.
Any user with an account on that computer can access the public folders Windows and all the files in them. Warning:you can not restrict access to some users and allow it to others.
How to share files on a network using Public Folders in Windows
By default public folder sharing network is turned off (except in the case of Group Home ). Only users who have an account on the computer can access public folders that are not shared.
If we activate the sharing of public folders of Windows, not only computer users, but any network user can view, open and edit files as if they were stored in your computer. Warning: you can not restrict access to some users and allow it to others.
How to enable the sharing of Public Folders in Windows
Let’s see how to enable sharing of public folders of Windows (operation to be performed on each computer that will access public folders).
Windows 8 / 8.1 | Windows 7
If you’re using Windows 8 / 8.1 press on the computer keyboard keys Windows (is the key with the Windows logo) andX simultaneously. If you’re using Windows 7 on a computer keyboard press button only Windows .
We click on Control Panel .
In the search box of the control panel (top right) we type network . Network and Sharing Center . In we left pane, click Change advanced sharing settings . Windows 8 / 8.1 : let all the networks and we click on the arrow to expand the section and view the contents. Windows 7 : identify the network profile used, Home or Work or Public ( the network profile used is indicated with the voice current profile ). We look for the section Public folder sharing . We select the check box to allow others to allow reading and writing files in the Public folders all users with access to the network . Let’s click Save changes . If requested, provide an administrator password or confirmation. Please note:we verify that they are activated even rumors Turn on network discovery (necessary to enable the mutual visibility between network devices) and Enable file and printer sharing (necessary to make the shared files accessible to users of the network).
We press on the computer keyboard key Windows and we click on Control Panel .
In the search box of the control panel (top right) we type network .
We click Network and Sharing Center .
In the group Sharing and Discovery we click on the arrow to the right of the Public folder sharing .
We select Turn on sharing can open, edit, and create files for all users with access to the network .
If you do not want to allow users to edit and create files instead select Turn on sharing can open files to all users with access to the network .
We click Apply . Caution: check that the voices are enabled network discovery (necessary to enable the mutual visibility between devices on the network), and Sharing file (needed to make the shared files available to users of the network).
Password protected sharing
In the advanced sharing settings it is possible to enable or disable the Password protected sharing .
By activating the password protected sharing access to public folders of Windows will be possible only to those who have a user account with a password (this option is not available if the computer is included in a domain).
How to access the Public Folders to Windows from a computer network
Let’s see a practical example of how to share a file using public folders in Windows.
Suppose we have two computers on the network: PC White Black PC and want to share a file called staff that is on PC White. Both computers activate sharing the public folder. On the PC White, inside the subfolder Public Documents (in the folder Public ) copy the file staff . To access files from your PC Personal Nero do this: open the Control Panel PC Black. In the box Search control panel (top right) we type network . We click View network computers and devices .We double-click the name of the computer (in this case PC White). I click Users and Public . In the folder public documents shall see the file Personnel (on the PC White).
