Netvibes : A dashboard for all applications
Would you like access to all your trust services from a single Web page ?
Try this service could become your ” ideal home ” on the Web
The Web is not just a set of simple sites : there are dozens of services , interactive web sites that meet a specific need , at the request , or provide information that interest you most .
Some examples? The sites of the weather, calendars (like Google) to use on-line , the virtual hard disk to store files to share with friends and colleagues.
To help you gather in one page all the services to which you rely , there is a site (free of charge ) with enormous potential : Netvibes.com
In a nutshell, it is a “container” for sites and services ( interactive or not) and could become a starting point for all your navigations on the Web aPasso In this step you will discover how to subscribe and how to customize it quickly ( and , why not, even fun) to your personal pages . Log on at www. netvibes . com. The one that opens up before you is a generic page , showing you some of the content that you can insert into your pages personal e-mail, music and video search , news drawn from major newspapers , records. . . and the inevitable weather forecast.
To subscribe to the service, click on the word Login at the top right of the page , then click the ” Register Now! ” In the window that appears on the screen. Netvibes is fully translated into several languages , and among these , fortunately there is also Italian. The data Netvibes asks you really are reduced to the essentials : an email address and a password. Once you click on “Register”, without the need for further confirmation , your account is “open” . To begin , create a page other than the initial one , by clicking on ” New Tab ” . You can give a name to this card ( we have chosen simply ” Home Page” ) but do not worry : you can change it (like all the other settings of the site) at any time. To change the name on the card just click the existing name and enter the new one. Add a simple form on the page. On the left , you can appreciate a list of built- in Netvibes modules (but there are many others ): our chosen is Webnote . Click on the appropriate link on the left and you will see the window you see in the picture.
Then click on “ Add to my page ” to see the module positioned on the page. The newly added module is very simple: a small piece of paper on which the virtual write what you want to remember . But clearly shows the general operation of the modules. Moving the mouse cursor over the title bar , an arrow appears on the left , the inscription Change and a small ‘ X ‘ on the right.
With the arrow on the left , the size of Webnote are reduced to only the title bar, with the ‘ X ‘ module is deleted (but before it is asked for confirmation ), by clicking on “Edit” opens instead a small configuration panel , which in this case allows you to change the title of the window , the font used and the color of the background. In a box that you find in these pages you can read the description of some applets ( we use to call it , small applications ) .
To continue your journey into the world of Netvibes , go back to the default page , clicking the General tab , in the upper left. Next to the name of the label you will see an ‘X ‘ (which , as before, is to eliminate the component – this time the entire board – from your page ) and a dart.
Clicking the arrow opens a small window configuration : try , for example, to change the icon of the card or the number of its columns . The page in the figure has increased from three to four columns.
And now, how to move some modules in the fourth column ?
In the simplest way : by dragging it with the mouse. Position yourself on the title bar , for example, the box ” Search Web ” and move it to any other point of the window, a placeholder will show the new position of the module.
Before moving on to explore other functions Netvibes , arrange the final details of the page : first, in ” Write here the title of your page ” you can click with the mouse and “baptize ” your Netvibes page . Then add all the modules that you want and eventually regained a bit ‘ of space on the display by closing the bar on the left that lists the applets available (just click on the usual ‘ X ‘ ) .
