How to test the RAM?

If your computer has crashed sudden and unexplained, even after a few days between one event and another, and even without any apparent relation, then it is highly likely that there is something wrong in your RAM. Here, therefore, that in this simple article I will explain how to test the RAM .

If, unfortunately, there are some locations of RAM that have been damaged in any way, until you try to retrieve the information previously written in those particular memory cells, the computer does not show any own characteristic symptoms. To try, therefore, to identify any problems, the most effective solution, but certainly not the faster one, consists in writing, and then reading, from all RAM memory locations available (varying, at the same time, the type of data used in such a way

To access most amount of RAM memory as possible, and then to test the behavior effectively, it is necessary to use a tool that is able to load before any type of operating system. Among the software available for this purpose, Memtest86 + is undoubtedly one of the best as well as being totally free, it also allows it to be used through a simple USB pen drive (but, if you wish, using a standard CD / DVD).
To download Memtest86 + went then at this page and click on the link called  Download (Pre-built & ISOs) . At this point, if the computer to be analyzed is fairly recent, most likely you will be able to boot from USB, and therefore you can download the file called Auto-installer for USB Key(otherwise, you must first download the file Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO ,  preferably in the , and then you will proceed to burn it).

Once you download the file called Auto-installer for USB Key , insert a USB stick into the computer and make a note of the letter that will be assigned automatically (keep in mind that any files in the key will be subsequently deleted ). At this point, after you open the file you just downloaded, start the file called  Memtest86 + USB Installer , accept the license terms (by clicking I Agree ), select the drive letter assigned to the USB pen drive, put a check mark next Voice Check this box if you want to format the drive and, finally, click on  Create .
After you have properly prepared the pen drive (or after you burn your CD / DVD), now you are left with nothing but connect the key to the PC to analyze and recall the so-called boot menu . To do this latter operation will have, however, usually, two possibilities:

  • the first, and faster, is to press, during the screen of POST , a particular function key (such as, for example, F8 or F12 ) and, later, select the USB stick (or the name that contains the CD /DVD);
  • the second, that you should only use if you can not use the first, is to enter the BIOS , by pressing a special button (which usually corresponds to Delete , F1 or F2 ), go to the section called Boot ( or something like that), and then set as the first boot device the USB stick (or the name that contains the CD / DVD).

Once done this, Memtest86 +, after being charged correctly, will immediately start analyzing the RAM:

rogram screen  Memtest86 + .

The section in the top right of the main screen of Memtest86 +, you can view the percentage of the current test as well as the entire sequence (indicated by  Pass ). In the lower right, however, you can see the number of passes completed (shown alongside the voice  Pass ) is the number of errors found (shown alongside the voice  Errors ).

Since Memtest86 + is a program that works to ‘ infinity , to obtain the results reliable enough usually it is allowed to work as long as possible (for example, overnight). If after completing at least once a full set of test does not detect any error, then it means that, most likely, there should not be just any kind of problem and, therefore, it will mean that you will quit its execution (for remove any doubt you may however try to work Memtest86 + for even longer, otherwise, by changing the default settings used by the program, you get him to do another set of tests (to do this, just press the letter  C and then choose from the various options available )).

If, unfortunately, are any error, most likely it means that at least one of the memory modules should be damaged. At this point, you may then remove a memory module , and then repeat the test until you have identified the defective memory module. If, however, individual memory modules are faulty, know that the blame could also be due to the slot where it is installed RAM (in this case, after moving the memory module to a different slot, you can simply do other tests again using Memtest86 +).

As you just saw, Memtest86 + is a program that allows you to easily understand if there is something wrong with the computer RAM. If, therefore, once all the necessary checks carried out, if I were to find the faulty RAM, for therefore no longer have any kind of problem, you will not simply buy one or more new memory module. However arrived at this point, you should have finally figured out how to test your RAM .
