If photography is your passion and you want to learn how to best capture the most important moments of your life, you do not need to become a force for professional photographers. There are some things that may be useful to exploit the full potential of modern digital apparecciature. In this guide, we try to understand how best to use your camera and get amazing results.
The eye digital
small LCD is still one of the most innovative elements of this type of devices. Often (but not always) is the only valid support to see if a shot is really good. Thanks to the LCD panel, you can also get a preview of the shots taken, which allows you to delete and edit images even at the time. All this translates nell’indubbio advantage of being able to judge, delete and then re-do, the shots is not satisfactory. As mentioned in the previous section, consumption, however, are such that often you are forced to replace the batteries in a hurry to be able to see on the screen shots stored. Some models also have video output to view the images in the memory card on your TV screen. In this way, we can project with ease entire photo albums, even at home with friends and family.
Essential for the flash
to take pictures indoors, experienced users also use it to reduce the contrast in outdoor environments, where there are zones with different brightness. Almost all the products in this comparison have functions for the abatement digital effect “red eye”, typically found in every shot with human subjects. Within the comparison table below you will find the value, expressed in meters, the flash range. In the event that you are having to shoot in low light conditions keep in mind this simple formula to calculate: (guide number) / (aperture) x (ISO / 100) The “guide number” means the maximum capacity in meters as stated by the manufacturer.
For example, a flash that has 40 meters in scope, used on a camera with a sensitivity of ISO 250 and aperture value
Attentive to the quality of the shot to increase the number of storable still pictures, some cameras will perform the compression, decreasing, logically, the objective quality. In the summary table you can find the maximum number of shots for each supported resolution, which may be contained in the memory card supplied with each camera. To give you an idea of the space occupied by a picture, imagine that we take a photo with a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels.
If you want to assign a color depth of 24 bit (16 million colors), the picture will occupy: 1024 x 768 x 24 = 18,874,368 bits Dividing by the number 8 so obtained, we will count in bytes (standard units to calculate the space occupied) 18,874,368 / 8 = 2,359,296 bytes or 2.3 MB.
What really are quite a few! It is therefore easy to understand how a card from 8MB you can make people feel just three photos at this resolution. However, if you compress the photos in jpeg format, typically used by almost all digital cameras, the maximum number of photos that can be stored may increase substantially.
The press The first thing to do is plan your printing project, or decide on which paper (photo paper, glossy paper, special or otherwise) and what resolution you want to print the photo. The size of the image is of much importance, since excessively enlarging the photo, snap happened, you would get an unpleasant effect of “shelling“. Also in this case it is possible to mathematically calculate the printing ratio, between the image expressed in the video and that we want to get on paper.
Suppose we print the photos we have mentioned above. Having access to a printer 600 x 600 dpi, and wanting to spend for each pixel on the screen a point of printing on paper, the size of the printed image will be: 1024/600 = 1.7 cm 768/600 = 1.28 cm This is clearly unrealistic size, unless you want to print a postage stamp!
Then we will have to resort to (which is often done automatically) in order to restore the file size displayed on the screen. The missing pixels are added according to an arbitrary criterion, adding, for example between two points blacks, one or more points of the same color. If you want the result of your efforts photos have a life even on paper, you’ll have to print it in high resolution, whereas for publication on the Web will suffice a much lower resolution.
How much it cost
at the cost of the camera, must be added the cost of an extra memory card (almost always essential), batteries and its charger. So be careful when removing the portfolio: with some extra money, in fact, it is often possible to choose a model that includes these essential accessories. Do not buy cameras that do not use rechargeable batteries, it would be a waste of money: you’ll end up having to shoot with a real cartridge belt of AA batteries!
A good supply of rechargeable batteries during a trip, it is a prerequisite to be able to make a good number of shots in complete freedom, without being forced to return to base each time for a refill. The crucial question is however: “should buy a digital camera?”. The answer is certainly yes, provided you have a minimum of familiarity with the computer (PC or Mac that is), printers, drivers and cables. Do not expect to get quality images comparable to that of traditional cameras, especially professional or semi-professional level. The results, however, can still be egregious and immense satisfaction whenever you can and realize the so-called “finished product“, ready to be inserted into their photo album. You do not need to be a professional computer, let alone of photography, to produce images of decent quality.
A little patience and imagination are often more than enough.
